A fabulous minaret

With its minaret rising 210 meters—or 60 stories—above the Atlantic Ocean, the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco, is the tallest minaret in the world and the tallest building in Morocco. Built in just seven years during the reign of King Hassan II, the Hassan II Mosque is the most ambitious structure ever constructed in Morocco. It is one of only two mosques in the country open to non-Muslims. It can accommodate 25,000 worshippers inside, while the outer courtyards can accommodate an additional 80,000 people.

An inspiring location and noble architecture

King Hassan II declared in a speech on July 9, 1980, that he wanted to “build this mosque on the water, because the throne of God was on the water. Thus, the faithful who go there to pray, to praise the Creator on solid ground, can contemplate the sky and the ocean of God.” Hence its location on the Atlantic Ocean, which can be seen through the glass floor inside. Work began in 1986. Some 6,000 of the Kingdom’s finest craftsmen, using the finest materials from all over Morocco—cedar wood from the Middle Atlas, marble from Agadir on the southern Atlantic coast—worked day and night to complete the building on August 30, 1993, the eve of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

A world of worshippers that offers a gentle ocean breeze

Walking outside, you can see some of the most beautiful zelliges (tiles) up close in shades of blue, ivory, and pale yellow. It's crucial not to miss the extravagant prayer hall, whose retractable ceiling opens, offering worshippers the gentle ocean breeze. Non-Muslims must join a group tour (several tours are offered throughout the day, but times vary depending on prayer times) and dress respectfully to gain access to the prayer hall, ablutions room, and hammam.
