Casablanca is a large, bustling city where visitors often find there are few places to rest and relax.
As in any big city, there's always something going on, and it can be difficult to find ways to get away from the hustle and bustle and think about new adventures or organize your travel plans.
If you find this is happening to you, do as the locals do and take a trip to the stunning Kasbah of Boulaouane, located just south of the city of Casablanca.
A kasbah is the Moroccan equivalent of a castle, and this sturdy building was built as a fortress overlooking the Oum er-Rbia wadi.
According to historical records, the Boulaouane Kasbah was built by Moulay Ismail in 1710 as part of his efforts to increase peace and stability in the region.
The castle's elevated location at the bend of this river must have been ideal for this. In fact, one of the best parts of visiting the Boulaouane Kasbah in Morocco is that a long, winding climb to the top of the ten-meter-high tower will offer you one of the most breathtaking views in the region.
Today, the area is incredibly peaceful, and many locals have discovered that the Boulaouane Kasbah is the perfect place to get away from it all.
Of course, the view isn't the only interesting aspect of the Boulaouane Kasbah. The Kasbah itself is very interesting to see.
Built with thick, protective walls, yet boasting magnificent and skillfully decorated architecture, it is a very interesting attraction. Inside the castle, in the central courtyard, you will find the Sultan's Palace, where the monarch would have stayed if he had chosen to visit the Kasbah.
The courtyard's floors and walls are covered in magnificent mosaic decorations, well worth a few photos. You'll also discover that the body of one of the local saints, Sidi Mancar, is buried here.
Come visit this monumental fort to create peace in the region and at the same time enjoy a relaxing calm.
