It's one of the country's iconic movie theaters. Built in 1957 by Dominique Basciano, the Rif Cinema is one of those places that belongs to another era. A bygone era, but whose atmosphere and distinctive features still linger, like timeless particles suspended in space. An integral part of Moroccan heritage, the Rif Cinema is a historic venue.
Watching a film, traveling, getting away from it all, going back in time and transcending topographical space, imagining, dreaming, forgetting, or learning—cinemas transport us and offer us unique and singular experiences. The Rif is one of those magical theaters. We embark, for the duration of a film, toward new destinations, to discover moving, sensational, surprising, funny, sad stories, toward snippets of life, in a place charged with these stories and these emotions.
An arthouse cinema, it projects Moroccan films on its giant screen, as well as non-Western films from India, Egypt, and other horizons, in a splendid room, recently renovated and equipped with the latest projection technology. Entirely draped in red fabric, the room is an invitation to escape. Each month, the cinema broadcasts a live opera from the Metropolitan Opera in New York or a performance of the Bolshoi Ballet.
