VISIT TO AZEMMOUR
Practices
Located on the left bank, at the mouth of the Oued Oum Er-Rbia River, the city of Azemmour is located 72 km southwest of Casablanca and 15 km north of El Jadida, cities to which it is connected by excellent roads. It seems as if time has stood still in the ancient fortified city that was founded by the Princes of Sanhaja.
For a short period, from 1513 to 1541, the Portuguese took over, partially transformed it and built a fortress there, but the city retained its Maghreb urban appearance with the Kasbah, the Medina, its cubic white houses and its ramparts.
Accessing the city through Dar El Baroud (House of Powder) we wander through the districts of the medina and the mellah where we can admire typical doors of Azemmour and chimneys of Portuguese inspiration. The city contains many testimonies of a Jewish presence, in particular the Jewish marabout Rabbi Abderhamane Moulnis who remains to this day a popular place of pilgrimage. The old city is surrounded by an ochre rampart and its partly accessible patrol path, from where we have beautiful views of the Oum Errebia wadi and a lunch or coffee break on one of the terraces of one of the many tourist riads is a must. Also worth visiting is "La Maison de l'Artisan" in the heart of the medina, which was created to perpetuate and protect the traditional heritage of the region.
Azemmour is also a city where contemporary art is present through its galleries, private collections and street art murals in the city medina.
